Temporomandibular Joint Disorder
Welcome
THE TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT

Normal TMJThe temporomandibular joint connects the lower jaw (the mandible) to the temporal bone at the side of the head. Place your fingers just in front of your ears and open your mouth and you can feel the joint on each side of your head. These joints are flexible, allowing the healthy jaw to move smoothly up and down and side to side. This enables us to talk, chew and yawn. Muscles attached to and surrounding the jaw joint control its position and movement. When the mouth is opened, the rounded ends (the condyles) of the lower jaw glide along the joint socket of the temporal bone. The condyles slide back to their original position when the mouth closes. A soft disc is positioned between the condyle and the temporal bone. This disc absorbs shocks to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) from chewing and other mouth movements.

Normal TMJDysfunction of the temporomandibular joint is referred to broadly as TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder). Identifying TMD can sometimes be difficult, and involves careful evaluation by a dentist or physician. The patient's description of symptoms combined with a physical examination of the face and jaw provides information very useful for diagnosing TMD. Pain, particularly in the chewing muscles and the jaw joint area is a common symptom along with complaints of limited jaw motion (can't open widely without pain) or locked jaw. Headaches, painful jaw clicking or popping, and the dental bite not coming together properly are also common symptoms, in addition to earaches, dizziness and hearing problems.
